- Use Geocode, a Google Sheet add-on that you can use to easily translate addresses into latitude/longitude coordinates. Learn more with this step-by-step guide.
- To create a KML file, one way is to use Google Map or Google Earth to pinpoint your locations and create the polygon coordinates. You can then save the KML file and import into XPO for geotargeting.
In XPO, you can define your target audience within a certain virtual perimeter or polygon by uploading a precise virtual line (radius) from one specific point to another. This allows you customize remarketing strategies based on behavior and visitation, as well as target your ad messages to any device that enters your demarcated areas or polygon. This is a process commonly known as "geo-fencing". This can be contrasted with the different types of location-based advertising that are also supported in XPO.
Geo-fencing is done in XPO via uploading a KML file, using a mark-up language to represent geographic data and coordinates. The KML file will contain the geographical regions/locations or polygons that you wish to target.
-
From the Utility menu, select Geo List.
-
Click +Geo List from the dashboard.

Edit Or Archive A Polygon List
From the Actions Menu under Geo List, select Edit or Archive.
- Once you click Edit, you will see the Polygon on the Map, Name, Center Coordinates, and Radius.
- You can upload one or more polygon KML file to an existing list.
- While editing the polygon, you will have 3 options:
1. Override: The old polygon KML file gets replaced by the newly uploaded file.
2. Update: New file gets uploaded along with the old file.
3. Remove: The newly uploaded file gets deleted.
After selecting one option, click submit and the file will be updated
How To Use Polygon Lists For Display Campaigns
- Create a (or edit an existing) Display ad group.
-
While creating a new ad group, under the Targeting option, click on Import Geo List and select the newly created polygon list. Once uploaded, you can view the polygon from the map.
-
While modifying an existing ad group, click on Geography, and import the new polygon list as explained in Step 2.
If you have multiple polygon lists, you can choose to Include or Exclude them in the ad group. The excluded areas are outlined in red, while the included areas are outlined in blue on the map.
All the polygons you upload will be visible on one map.
How To Use Polygon Lists For Meta Ads Campaigns
- Create a (or edit an existing) Meta Ads ad group.
-
While creating a new ad group, under the Targeting option, click on Import Geo List and select the newly created polygon list. Once uploaded, you can view the polygon from the map. For Meta Ads ad groups, the polygon (displayed as coordinates) and the selected radius (in kilometers by default) will appear on the map.
- While editing an existing ad group, click on Geography and import the new polygon list as explained in Step 2.
- You can upload multiple polygon KML files to Display and Meta Ads ad groups.
- If you clone a Display ad group, the polygons will be cloned successfully.
- For Meta Ads ad groups, you can clone the coordinates successfully and also change the radius unit.
- When you delete a polygon list from Utility > Geo List, it will automatically be deleted from XPO and will no longer be available for ad group targeting.
-
Once the KML file is uploaded, the name of the polygon appears differently in the UI depending on the ad channel:
